PLAYS - PACIFIC LYRIC ASSOCIATION YOUTH SYMPHONY
In 2022, PLA established a Youth Symphony (PLAYS). Our inaugural concert on February 18th, at the California Center for the Arts Escondido, featured a 50-piece orchestra playing Tchaikovsky’s Overture Romeo and Julietand Rimsky-Korskov’s Scheherezade. Our donors asked that we offer this concert free of charge to school children and their chaperones. Many public and homeschool groups took advantage of our offer and many were able to attend their first-ever symphony concert.
OPERA EDUCATION FOR YOUTH
Pacific Lyric Association is a traditional opera company when it comes to the actual production. You come to a beautiful theater and enjoy professional singers dressed in era-appropriate costumes with live musicians in the orchestra pit.
Our innovative approach is about the way we educate our young audiences. "Uh oh..." you might think, "they send the fat screaming lady to schools..." No, no, no. We do not. We believe that a single element like singing taken out of context does not represent opera at all. We would not advertise an apple pie to kids by showing them some flour, would we? We would tell them about all the ingredients and how they create a delicious pie when combined and processed in the appropriate order. That is precisely how we educate about opera.
We also emphasize the fact that opera does not do well if taken out of its natural habitat (a theater). Our idea of opera education has neither a hidden marketing agenda, nor a smart ticket sale strategy. The main and the only goal is to enrich young people's lives with an understanding and appreciation of the elite and sophisticated art of opera. If our mission sounds like a worthy cause to you - make a little contribution today. Your little gift will be a giant help.
