During his time he develops feelings for a woman named Zemfira, who is also a gypsy. They embark on a relationship. However, complications arise when Zemfira becomes attracted to another man known as Young Gypsy.
Upon witnessing Zemfira with Young Gypsy Aleko succumbs, to anger and jealousy. He confronts them leading to an altercation between the two men. Unfortunately, Aleko is defeated in the fight. Zemfira chooses to be with Young Gypsy. This turn of events leaves Aleko feeling devastated and betrayed.
As time passes Aleko's feelings of jealousy and anger intensify until they consume him entirely. Eventually, he decides to seek vengeance against Zemfira and Young Gypsy. While they are sleeping in their tent he. Commits an act by taking both their lives.
After committing this act Aleko experiences a realization of the gravity of his actions. Overwhelmed by guilt and sorrow he finds himself shattered emotionally. The other members of the community discover the bodies and are filled with horror at what has occurred. Consequently, they choose to exile Aleko from their community due to his deeds.
